More about Charles...

Charles “Mike” Royer has been with the Reddaway team since the spring of 1991. While it wasn’t his first job, he’s always been familiar with the trucking industry. Growing up, Charles had his dad and grandfather to look up to—two dedicated and hardworking truck drivers whose shared passion rubbed off on him. Seeing his dad drive his truck was always a proud and inspiring moment for Charles.

In fact, it was Charles’ dad that convinced him to join the Reddaway team, and we’re glad he did! He’s made the incredibly difficult accomplishment of driving accident-free his entire career. Charles earned the 2 Million Mile Safety Award which represents over 26 years of success and hard work!

How Trucking Became the Perfect Career Fit

Growing up, Charles enjoyed playing a lot of sports, especially football and baseball. But in addition to all that fun, Charles knew what it meant to work hard for a living. From the time he was 16 years old until he was 19, he worked hard in the construction industry. However, an injury caused him to slow down a little and he realized it might be time to switch industries.

Construction jobs were sparse, and it became clear that after spending his teenage years working on construction sites, it was time to move on to something else. Just like his dad and grandfather before him, trucking was the perfect answer to what Charles was looking for in a career and would soon become his passion, too.

An Amazing Safety Record

Skill and good luck are just two of the reasons Charles believes he has earned success in the trucking industry, but we all know it’s not just luck that keeps a great driver safe for all those years. He accredits his amazing safety record to making a lot of friends along the way. It’s much easier to stay alert and focused when you know you’re a part of a bigger team that’s all working toward the same goal of success for the company and customer satisfaction.

Charles says that although it was challenging at first, it’s not difficult for him to stay up at night anymore. He enjoys his career and doesn’t mind the hours, plus it helps that Reddaway linehaul drivers are typically home once a week. His positive attitude and focus travel with him as he finishes trips safely each week.

Making Time for Fun and Family

Being so focused on the road makes time for fun a necessity, and for Charles, it means having a blast on his desert buggy. His hobby allows him to have a some fun behind the wheel and enjoy a little off-road adventure.

In addition to truck driver, Charles also holds the title of dad. He has two grown sons of different professions—one is a paramedic and another a union electrician. While the generational trend for trucking looks like it may have ended with Charles, he’s still going strong as he expects to hit the 3 million mile mark for safety in 2017.

Thanks for all your dedication and hard work, Charles! We hope to see you earn the Three Million Mile Safety Award in the coming years—we know you can do it!
